Portfolio - Community buildings

With an established reputation for refurbishing and designing new community buildings, I sincerely believe that such, often neglected, buildings are vital to the cohesion of our communities. I am particularly eager to work on bringing them back into use and help ensure that local communities are able to enjoy first-class facilities. I am happy to have been involved in:

  • The conversion of redundant school buildings to community use in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion

  • The refurbishment of village halls in a number of villages

  • The design of a purpose-built community hall

Renovation of Mydroilyn Community Hall

A busy hall was suffering because of a lack of adequate facilities. The toilets were sub-standard, as was the kitchen. Access to the hall was restrictive because of the steps to the front door. The solution was to construct a new entrance lobby, with a ramped approach, and an extension to house appropriate toilets and kitchen facilities.

Renovation of Felinfach Memorial Hall

This once vibrant community hall had lain idle for a number of years because of a lack of proper heating and toilet facilities, leaving the community without any facilities for meeting. An extension housing a modern kitchen and toilet facilities was built, and the whole of the interior was updated, with a new floor and redecoration.

Caerwedros Memorial Hall

A few years back, the original hall fell victim to a devastating fire and had to be demolished, and the loss was badly felt by the community. A new one had to be built. The design reflects the form and materials of a traditional farm shed, but the facilities are modern and fit for purpose – underfloor heating driven by an air-source heat pump, and a new boarded oak floor.

Neuadd yr Hafod, Gorsgoch

The hall had lain almost derelict for a number of years, and was an eyesore in the village. The community rallied to raise funds to refurbish it and make it fit for purpose once more. Working within the existing shell, new toilets, storerooms, kitchen and hall were designed, and the building is once more is the centre of community activity.
